| A HISTORY LESSON FROM YORK |
The largest ancient gothic cathedral of its kind in Northern Europe, York Minster was built in 1472, but the construction of it began some 250 years earlier in 1220.
But you may be surprised to hear that the history of the site stretches back almost 2000 years with the erection of a wooden church in 627AD for the baptism of Edwin, King of Northumberland.
The hallowed site has seen many owners over the years with the Romans, Normans & Danes all staking a claim on it throughout the centuries, but its history doesn't just stop there.
The impressive and beautiful stained glass windows tell various stories throughout history, including the Rose Window, situated in the south tower, celebrating the end of the War of the Roses between Lancaster and York. This beautiful piece of stained-glass art dates back 1270, still with its original panels.
Yet in July 1984, a lightning bolt from a summer storm struck the roof of this magnificent building, causing it to become engulfed in fire before the roof finally collapsed. It would not be repaired until 1988, when specially designed roof bosses were placed, each one designed by winners of a competition run by BBC television program Blue Peter.
This wonderful building truly is historic in so many ways and I'm thrilled to share these pictures with you as I tell you its story!

| A Visit To Yorkshire & a History Lesson. |
Recently, I paid a visit to Yorkshire and of course, I couldn't pass on the opportunity to visit the beautiful city of York.
The thing I love most about York is how historic it is. Here we have The Shambles, which is probably one of the most historic streets in the city, with many of the houses still there dating from the late 14th and 15th centuries.
In fact, The Shambles gets a mention by William The Conquerer in the Doomsday Book of 1086.
The name "The Shambles" is derived from the word "shammel" an Anglo-Saxon word for shelves, which also tells you a bit about the street itself.
Back in the day, The Shambles was a street full of butcher shops and slaughterhouses, with cuts of meat hanged or laid outside these buildings, often on the window shelves, ready for sale. And this accounts for the fact that "Shambles" was once a term for a slaughterhouse or meat market.
Indeed, The Shambles is the oldest and most well-preserved Medieval street in the whole world and was actually the inspiration for Diagon Alley in the Harry Potter film series.
So there you have it - a bit of a history lesson for you today, boys!

| Grief is the price we pay for love. |
You will have noticed that I've not been online much this week. And unfortunately, that is because, on Saturday afternoon, I learned the awful news that my beloved Mum had passed away suddenly.
Needless to say, I am devastated, especially with this being not only totally unexpected but also having lost my Dad only 11 months ago.
So, I'm taking time out. I'm hoping to ease myself back in slowly as I take each day as it comes. Eventually, there will be a funeral to arrange, legal issues to sort out, and the dreaded task of clearing out my Mum's house - the home I lived in for 17 years. Lots of memories and I don't doubt that it is going to be painful - probably even more painful than the funeral itself.
But if I've learned anything since Saturday is that life must go on. It's going to be hard, and I'm going through all sorts of emotions all at the same time. I'm mourning not just the loss of both of my parents but also the loss of a chapter of my life.
Our parents are our link to our childhood. And one thing I've discovered is that once they both pass on, it really does symbolize the end of the child inside you and your final step into full adulthood. It's a stark reminder of what our parents truly did for us and how no matter how old you are, you never stop being their kids.
I know I will slowly heal from this. It's going to be a learning curve as I make sense of my grief and live through it. My parents, though not in their earthly form, will always be with me, no matter what. And the best way I can honour them both is to live my life.
So with that said, as soon as I'm able, I will be back to what will be my "new" normal. I may not be firing on all cylinders for a while, but I will get there. It will just take time.
