THE BEGINNING
Stephanie stepped into the lounge and surveyed the scene for a moment. Her Aunt was seated on a chair next to a small table chatting to someone on the telephone, she seemed quite anxious, though Stephanie could not work out what about from the one sided conversation. Her Aunt beckoned her into the room and motioned for her to take a seat and then resumed her conversation.
Stephanie did as she was bid and walked across the rug and took up a position across the room from her Aunt and her small cousin. Cuthbert sat feet stretched out in front of him on a foot stool practically at his mothers feet. Stephanie eyed him with some disdain as she sat down and straightened her pretty summer dress over her lap.
A boy of 10 Cuthbert was in Stephanie’s opinion a nuisance and encumbrance and a detail she would have loved to eliminate from her summer holiday with her beloved Aunt.
Why does he sit there like an obedient dog ? she thought to herself, a shy and retiring boy Cuthbert was not fun for Stephanie to have around. He wined about everything, he was rather rotund and his clothes often strained to fit his chubby stature. Bulging at button and seam. Stephanie studied him as he sat head bowed at his mother’s feet. His round face and mop of wavey hair falling over one eye, any attempt to style it by her Aunt or Stephanie was immediately met with resistance by Cuthbert’s locks. Probably the only part of the child that actually showed any real resistance to anything. He was in Stephanie’s opinion and she was the best person to judge these things, a boy of virtually no brain, devoid of any real personality and as an amusement to her completely useless.
Stephanie didn’t hate Cuthbert but she did loath him often, this basically stemmed from her adoration of her Aunt and the fact that Cuthbert was the apple of her Aunt’s eye. In short Stephanie was jealous of Cuthbert and jealous of how much time and care her aunt took fussing over his clothes, his education, his feeding of which there seemed to Stephanie to be a lot.
Cuthbert’s mother had since birth wanted to be the best mother she could be, having lost his father early on she felt it her duty to be an even better parent so as to compensate. In short this eventually resulted in the smothering of Cuthbert. She devoted every waking minute to his care and well being. She took advice from every one who offered it and was often swayed by others as to the best course of action for Cuthbert’s future. Rarely relying on her own ability to decide she sought constant council from friends and family about everything from his schooling and education to what sort of under ware Cuthbert should wear. She was a worrier from the start, an insecure woman who read every book she could lay her hands on when he was a baby about child care.
Cuthbert rarely had an original thought past what sort of cake he wanted after dinner. He was docile and pliable he accepted his lot and felt that his mother knew best always.
His views of Stephanie however, were of complete and utter ore. She was in Cuthbert’s eyes a beautiful swan, her eyes sparkled and her hair shone. He longed to touch her pretty blonde ringlets, they looked soft he thought and how graceful she was when she wafted about in her pretty summer dress. Where as most things in the world escaped Cuthbert’s notice or indeed interest Stephanie did not. He was devoted to her.
The telephone receiver clicked and Stephanie’s Aunt turned to her with a look of concern on her face. “What is it Aunty ?” Stephanie asked. “Oh I have to go to an important meeting and I cant take Cuthbert, grown up stuff you know”. No need to worry his little head with these things.” she smiled and reached out and ran her fingers through Cuthbert’s mop of unruly brown hair. “Oh!” said Stephanie, looking thoughtful, Her Aunt explained that the child care she had arranged had let her down at the last minute and it seemed that every one she knew was far to busy to look after her darling little boy today. Suddenly Stephanie hit on an idea. ” Auntie !! I can look after Cuthbert” she exclaimed! “Oh my dear that’s very sweet of you, but you have your ballet lesson this afternoon and you can’t miss that. “No No I will have to cancel my meeting.” “Cuthbert, can come with me Auntie, my ballet teacher won’t mind a bit and he will be perfectly safe and he can watch the lesson., “Oh do say yes,” she implored “I think Cuthbert may enjoy it far more than any stuffy afternoon with a child minder, wouldn’t you Cuthbert ?” She crooned. Cuthbert grinned widely. He had longed to see Stephanie dance ever since her mother and his had talked of how beautiful and graceful she was in her regulation seemed ballet tights and her pretty pink tutu and of how well she fitted her leotard.
Cuthbert suddenly had an original thought.
He imagined Stephanie gliding like a beautiful graceful swan in her ballet shoes around a shining wooden floor. The image was captivating to him. His mother and Stephanie continued to talk, he was vaguely aware of Stephanie cajoling and pleading her case, but mostly he didn’t hear anything of the conversation as he was far away in his own little world watching the beautiful Stephanie dance and pirouette.
His fantasy was interrupted suddenly by his mother pulling on his coat and hat.
It was agreed Stephanie would take Cuthbert to the ballet lesson with her and he would be able to sit and watch her and the other girls perform their ballet practice while his mother went to her important meeting.
Cuthbert sat obediently in the car waiting for his mother to buckle his seat belt, he gazed out of the window and dreamed of Stephanie dancing. With Cuthbert safely fastened in place his mother took up her position in the driver’s seat and they were on their way. Stephanie chatted constantly about what fun they would have and how Cuthbert would enjoy the ballet lesson. She appeared to want to continue convincing her Aunt that no harm could possibly come to him and indeed how could it in such a nice and proper environment. “Besides” Stephanie warbled “the ballet is so good for Cuthbert’s artistic development he really shouldn’t miss out.” Her aunt agreed, whole heatedly, it was actually a blessing in disguise after all and the opportunity for Cuthbert to experience new things culturally simply mustn’t be missed.
Finally they arrived at the dance studio and they all walked inside together, Stephanie quickly ran up to her teacher and courtseyed then proceeded to explain the predicament, the dance teacher looked thoughtful for a moment and then seeing the pained expression on Cuthbert’s mother’s face agreed.
His mother took him to a low bench and sat him down removing his coat and hat she hung them on the small pegs in the cloak room, Then before leaving him in Stephanie and the ballet teachers capable hands she took a small white hankie from her purse and spat discreetly on it before washing Cuthbert’s face with it. An unpleasant experience but one that Cuthbert had learned to endure. She kissed him on the cheek and left for her meeting.
The lesson began with a warm up exercise. Cuthbert sat mouth gaping as he watched 12 young ladies all between 13 and 15 stretch, bend generally prepare for the lesson, all standing in a row holding the ballet bar each wore her regulation seamed ballet tights, leotard and tutu. Cuthbert had never seen anything so strangely enchanting in his entire life, he was completely captivated by not one but 12 beautiful swans.
The teacher continued to walk up and down the line correcting positions and advising each girl in turn until there was a loud sharp knock at the door. “Carry on girls with your warm up then start to practice your new steps while I see to this” the teacher instructed. Then she bustled out of the studio to attend to the interruption.
Cuthbert simply gazed captivated by the scene, his mind was devoid of anything but the beauties before him. He was suddenly rudely awoke from his almost dream like state by a sharp slap across the cheek. Aww he winced and tears began to swell in his little piggy eyes. ” Don’t be a baby Cuthbert” Stephanie snapped. And taking his arm she pulled him up from the bench and walked him across the wooden floor. Confused but as always glad of her attention he followed her to the bar where the other girls were standing in a huddle giggling and glancing at him.
"Are we agreed then? " Stephanie asked "Oh yes" the other girls chorused, giggling they took Cuthbert tot he changing room at the back of the studio. He was roughly pushed inside and then the girls gathered around him. Poor Cuthbert was crimson with embarrassment, his little mind raced trying to make sense of the things that were happening. the girls began giggling and chatting while Stephanie started unbuttoning his clothes and in 2 mins flat he was standing before a group of giggling, teenage girls all dressed in beautiful ballet ware and to his horror he was stripped down to his underpants, while Cuthbert found this unexpected experience completely humiliating he also found it strangely exciting.
The girls milled around searching thro boxes and finally an outfit was chosen and agreed on for him. Cuthbert thought for a moment that he may protest but faced with so many determined and excited young ladies he felt simply helpless. they pulled and squashed, coaxed, criticized, commented and generally forced Cuthbert into a girdle similar to the ones his mother wore. Next a pair of tights were pulled on and up over his round tummy. A leotard was added and finally a tutu. Cuthbert was beyond astonished but the girls stood back and laughed and laughed at their creation. Even tho his cheeks burned with crimson torment his mind raced in new unexplainable directions.
Cuthbert’s humiliation had only just begun !
The girls led him in a gaggle back out to the dance studio, they positioned him at the bar placing his right hand on the bar and wrestling him into position they then line up in front of him so that e was hidden from view from the front of the studio. Cuthbert had no idea what to do he could see his reflection in the mirror and he could see the reflections of a dozen beautiful girls and he felt so ridiculous wedged into these alien clothes, positioned in a ballet stance he was frozen to the spot.
The studio door burst open and the dance teacher bustled back in. ” All sorted girls” she said “Now onto the lesson and I hope no more interruptions” Cuthbert stood frozen, deeply humiliated and strangely excited he listened to the sound of the dance teachers voice spilling instruction after instruction as the girls practiced their dance positions and steps in front of him. He hoped that his short stature would keep him hidden from view, prayed in fact. Then his mind was taken away again the first girl in the line broke from the formation and glided across the floor pirouetting as she went she was magnificent to Cuthbert’s untrained eye, again he was mesmerized. Then before his eyes the next girl followed and the next gliding one after the other in their dainty ballet shoes falling out of the line, gliding, pirouetting across the room to the other side. He was so captivated he momentarily forgot his predicament.
Soon only two girls remained in the line in front of him, once again the fantasy left and the true horror of his situation dawned.
He was to be exposed any minute, Cuthbert once again froze as he watched the last two girls depart the line. Suddenly as if some greater force had gripped his feet and hands Cuthbert started to move he reached into the air with his chubby left hand and imagined he was a graceful swan as the others before him had been, he stretched and strained against the tight dance ware and felt his feet move. The teacher looked aghast at the scene as Cuthbert lopped, and barreled his rotund figure into the middle of the dance studio. His feet slid on the shiny floor and he cavorted in the most ungainly manner across the floor for some reason unknown to anyone but Cuthbert who was caught in the moment entirely, he attempted a pirouette his feet failed him his body tumbled and he landed in an unceremonious heap in the middle of the dance studio…………………. Time seemed to stand still every one looked at him the teacher aghast the girls mouths open. The world had frozen in time to mark Cuthbert’s humiliation. He was crimson he could feel the heat of his embarrassment rising from his face.
Silence prevailed for some minutes they seemed like hours to Cuthbert, then the silence was broken by peals of uncontrollable laughter. The girls sank to their knees squealing and laughing with absolute hysteria as they looked at the fallen Cuthbert in his ridiculous ballet garb.
"Cuthbert Archibald Witherspoon Hog!" the dance teacher barked, as she bustled across the floor towards him. If you are so keen young man to join my dance class then so be it. I will have your mother book you a term of lessons, and we will see if we can’t improve your disastrous performance.
At the exact same moment the door opened and Cuthbert’s mother stood mouth open looking at the scene, Stephanie acted quickly, her devious plan had worked beautifully now all she had to do was tie up the loose ends and reassure her dear Aunt that little Cuthbert had been so enraptured by the lesson that he had wanted nay begged to be allowed to join in. she soon fetched Cuthbert from the floor and dusted him off. praising his performance highly and requesting support from her peers she soon had her Aunt eating out of her hand and had saved the blushes of her dance teacher to boot.
Cuthbert stood head down his humiliation almost complete he resigned himself to his fate, the teacher and his mother discussed how he had potential as he was after all related to the beautiful Stephanie and if he was this keen she simply must sign him up. fetching her cheque book from her purse she handed over in the blink of an eye a hansom cheque to cover Cuthbert’s dance lessons for the next 3 months.
